Newly qualified drivers in Ireland could lose their license
Newly qualified drivers in Ireland could lose their license if caught on their mobile phones.
Transport Minster Shane Ross is open to expanding new laws that recently came into play in the UK, to Ireland if necessary.
New UK laws that came into play at the start of this month will see drivers caught using their mobile phones behind the wheel receiving double penalty points and double fine. These stricter and more severe laws mean newly qualified drivers will lose their license if caught.
Currently in Ireland, if a driver is caught on their mobile phone they will receive a fine and three penalty points. Tougher penalties and increased penalty points could be introduced to the Irish system if it saves lives, explained Mr. Ross.
Last year, 187 people lost their life on Irish Roads and according to Gardaí, an average of 76 people were detected for mobile phone offences every day.
Using your mobile phone while driving risks serious injury and even death to yourself, your passengers, other motorists and pedestrians.
Managing Director of Boxymo.ie Gary McClarty says “We welcome any change in the law intended to reduce the number of deaths on Irish roads. Motorists need to be aware of the dangers of using mobile phones while driving. It is inexcusable.”
This is as an epidemic problem, yet fortunately it is not applicable to everyone. Boxymo.ie does not punish all drivers for the common mistakes of their peers, they reward good drivers.
